ProLiteracy Establishes Haiti Earthquake Emergency Fund

SYRACUSE, NY, Jan. 15, 2010 — The world's largest organization of adult literacy programs has established a relief fund to assist the adult learners of its network of four partner programs in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

ProLiteracy President and CEO David C. Harvey said "We're working with our partners in and around Port-au-Prince—Fonkoze, Ayiti Konse Vet (AKV), GTAPF, and H.A.S.—to identify most urgent needs," related to the magnitude-7.0 earthquake that devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince and left untold numbers of residents dead, injured, or missing.

Harvey said, "We need donations to respond first to the emergency needs of students and program staff—clean water, food, and safe shelter."

ProLiteracy Vice President for International Programs Lynn Curtis said each ProLiteracy partner provides a unique combination of literacy, social services, and community development projects. "The primary mission of our partner programs in Haiti is to help people change their lives by giving them the reading, writing, and basic math skills they need to earn money, stay healthy, and improve their communities," Curtis said. "In the case of Haiti, these will be essential skills to rebuild Port-au-Prince."

Regular updates about ProLiteracy's partner programs in Haiti will be posted on our Web site.

Individuals and organizations who wish to donate to ProLiteracy's Haiti Earthquake Emergency Fund can do so online, by calling the organization's headquarters at (315) 422-9121 or 1-888-528-2224, or by mailing contributions to 1320 Jamesville Ave., Syracuse, NY 13210. More information about how the funds will be used is available on our Web site.

"We will post updates on our Web site as soon as we have details about the condition of our partners and the adults they serve," Harvey said.
