HSLP Reading Materials
Reading Materials: Three topics – Four reading levels!
The reading materials present three key safety concepts in four formats suitable for a broad range of adult learners.
Reader Topics
-
Smoke detectors save lives.
-
Escape plans help families get out of fires alive.
-
You can take steps to prepare for a disaster.
Level 1: Pictograms
The pictograms feature detailed illustrations paired with a small amount of descriptive text. The text is intended to guide instructors as they talk students through the topics presented in the pictograms. The pictograms are ideal for adults with little to no English reading skills. The illustrations provide a supportive framework that enables students with limited literacy to discuss key safety messages in context without being intimidated by the volume of words.

Levels 2 & 3: A and B Readers
The kit includes three context-based stories that feature adults in authentic situations related to fire safety and disaster preparedness. Each story is presented in two levels: A reader and B reader. Both readers emphasize comprehension skills and address other literacy skills including vocabulary, grammar, and fluency.
B readers tell a story through a series of illustrations that are each accompanied by a few lines of text. These materials are ideal for beginning readers. A readers include the same illustrations and story concepts as the B readers, with added text for more advanced students. In multi-level classes, teachers and tutors can provide both readers so that all students can participate in the lesson together.
