ProLiteracy Mourns Loss of New Jersey Literacy Leader

Margery (“Margie”) Oppenheimer, former executive director of Literacy Volunteers of New Jersey, passed away on March 24, 2012, in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey. Her work in New Jersey was recognized nationally, and she consulted on a wide range of projects with ProLiteracy. Margie was instrumental in the development of the Literacy Volunteers of America accreditation model, guided the conversion to ProLiteracy Accreditation, and also worked on the updating of the trainer certification system. She is survived by her husband Martin Fried.

“Margie was such a great resource in a range of credentialing projects. She epitomized the concept of research to practice—she helped set high but achievable expectations and ensured that literacy organizations had the information and resources needed to achieve these,” said Mark Cass, vice president of community engagement at ProLiteracy. “She was a joy to work with, and we are saddened by this unfortunate news.”
