Background
ProLiteracy America, the U.S. programs division of ProLiteracy Worldwide, has received a grant from Verizon to launch training programs for adult literacy practitioners across the nation. Seven cities have been selected to host the ProLiteracy America Regional Trainings: Albuquerque, NM; Portland, OR; Roanoke, VA; Providence, RI; Minneapolis, MN; Shreveport, LA; and Pittsburgh, PA. All programs are open to the public.
According to Peter A. Waite, executive director of ProLiteracy America, each two-day event will offer instructional and management training led by nationally recognized experts in the field. "With more than 1,200 affiliates nationwide, ProLiteracy America is committed to delivering top quality training to volunteer literacy and adult basic education practitioners. These Verizon-sponsored regional programs are enabling ProLiteracy to deliver training that is customized to meet state and local needs."
The goal of the regional trainings is to bring the strength of ProLiteracy to bear on two of the most critical challenges facing local literacy organizations: increasing their capacity to serve a more diverse population and increasing their access to the innovative tools such as Verizon Litercy Campus they need to ensure effective organizational management and stability.
ProLiteracy will work through its new regional representatives and state affiliates to host the seven regional trainings. The trainings have two purposes: (1) to provide state-of-the-art training in materials and methods relevant to the identified needs of local organizations in each region; and (2) to provide organizations with information regarding Verizon Litercy Campus (VLC), an online resource for recruiting, training, and supporting literacy volunteers.
