PENGUIN HOTLINE PARTNERS WITH PROLITERACY TO INCREASE HOLIDAY IMPACT
Posted on November 30, 2021

The Penguin Hotline, Penguin Random House’s holiday gift-giving book recommendation service, is back for its eighth holiday season, going live on Wednesday, December 1st, and running through December 15th, 2021. This year’s theme is “Better with Books,” promoting the idea that the gift of a book makes every moment better.

This year, the Penguin Hotline is partnering with ProLiteracy, an organization whose mission is to change lives and communities through the power of adult literacy. For every consumer request that comes in to the Penguin Hotline between December 1st through the 15th, Penguin Publishing Group will donate $2, up to $10,000 total, to ProLiteracy.

Hotline users can get recommendations by writing into www.penguinhotline.com, and answering a few questions about the person in their life they’d like to gift a book. Answers to questions about the reader’s favorite books, TV shows, movies, magazines, hobbies, etc., will enable a Penguin Random House employee or author volunteer to send a personal note with customized book recommendations to help the customer shop.

"For 43 million adults in the United States, the idea of reading for pleasure is not a reality. It is exciting to partner with Penguin Random House for this campaign, because we agree—life is better with books," said Lara Pimentel, ProLiteracy’s Director of Development, “Connecting with the Penguin Hotline consumers is an incredible way for us to share the stories of adult literacy with an engaged audience. Further, donations from the campaign will be used to impact the lives of adult learners and their families.”

ProLiteracy's vision is to be the leading resource and champion for adult education and literacy worldwide. Through 1,000 member programs in the US and partners in 35 developing countries, ProLiteracy advocates for awareness, funding, and support to increase access for adult learners and provides professional development for adults who want to improve their literacy.

“It is an honor to partner with Penguin Random House for the Penguin Hotline. Literacy is the keystone of every social issue. Without a functional level of literacy, it can be impossible for adults to navigate daily life,” said Mark Vineis, ProLiteracy president and CEO, “Bringing awareness to the cause of adult literacy, while giving the gift of reading, to such a passionate group is the perfect holiday gift.”
