ProLiteracy 2016 Midyear Update

"Education is the kindling of a flame, not the filling of a vessel." —Socrates

The Greek philosopher Socrates lived more than 2,400 years ago, but even then he recognized the importance of lifelong learning. ProLiteracy’s mission supports the same premise: Adults with low literacy can improve their lives through continued education.

As we near the end of our fiscal year, it’s a great time to reflect on the progress we have made over the past 12 months to advance adult literacy rates:

  • The new ProLiteracy website is rich in resources for tutors, trainers, students, and supporters alike.
  • The ProLiteracy Conference on Adult Literacy was attended by more than 500 educators and featured more than 100 sessions over three days on the latest adult literacy curricula and teaching methods. The next conference is planned for September 27-30, 2017, in Minneapolis. Save the date
  • Our publishing division introduced six new products with 24 different components, including a Spanish version of Scoreboost® for the GED® Test, a digital version of our popular adult reading series Challenger, and a content-based series for HiSET® test preparation.
  • Our programs division is field testing a new financial literacy project. The Expanding Access program continues to connect adult literacy education with other important social issues, bringing adult literacy services to people who would not have enrolled otherwise.
  • We partnered with World Reader to send e-readers with preloaded content to adults in a remote village in Kenya, increasing access to reading materials for adults and their families.

Our goal is to continue introducing new initiatives throughout 2016—and in the future—that will increase adult literacy rates here in the U.S. and worldwide.
