Today is Nelson Mandela International Day. The United Nations officially declared the day in 2009, with the first celebration in 2010. Nelson Mandela International Day is held annually on July 18 in recognition of Mandela’s birthday.

Mandela was integral in achieving freedom for black South Africans by ending apartheid. Mandela dedicated his life to serving others, creating positive change, and spreading his vision of social justice.
