Celebrate Adult and Family Literacy in September

September is a big month for literacy awareness and includes National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week (AEFL Week). Organized by the National Coalition for Literacy, the goal of AEFL Week is to collaborate with local and national organizations to increase public awareness of the vital role adult education and family literacy plays in our country’s economy, crime and poverty rates, healthy care costs, K-12 education, and more. This year, AEFL Week is September 26–October 1, 2016.

International Literacy Day is also celebrated in September. Organized by United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organizations (UNESCO), International Literacy Day takes place every year on September 8 to promote worldwide literacy. There are about 800 million adults worldwide with low literacy, and International Literacy Day sheds light on this issue while celebrating the organizations, supporters, and educators that have made progress possible. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day.

To help you celebrate these events, we’ve put together a toolkit. The free download includes information about AEFL Week and International Literacy Day, adult education facts, suggested activities, sample letters, social media templates, and more.
