How You Can Support Family Literacy During AEFL Week

Today kicks off Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, or AEFL Week. Organized by the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), the goal of AEFL Week is to collaborate with local and national organizations to increase public awareness of the vital role adult education and family literacy plays in our country’s economy, crime and poverty rates, healthy care costs, K-12 education, and more.

This week adult and family literacy organizations will be holding events and spreading the word about family literacy and the 36 million adults in the U.S. who are in need of adult education services. With 68% of ProLiteracy member programs operating with student waiting lists, while government funding continues to decline, it’s more important than ever to sound the alarm about adult education and help make an impact.

Here are a few ways you can help this week:

For Literacy Programs

  • Download the AEFL Week logo and fact sheet and add it to your website and social media profiles
  • Download ProLiteracy’s AEFL Week toolkit
  • Share facts, videos, and photos on social media using the hashtag #AEFLweek
  • Write a blog post and share it on social media
  • Write an Op-Ed or Letter to the Editor in your local paper
  • Organize an event and invite policymakers and others from your community

For Adult Education Advocates

If you are organizing any activities, from sharing on social media to planning an event, please fill out NCL’s activity report. Filling out the report will allow NCL to boost your efforts by publicizing your event and showcasing your support of adult education and family literacy.

This is our week to shine a light on family literacy and adult education. Together, we can become a larger voice for literacy!
