Romance Writers Raise Over $1 Million for Adult Literacy

Did you know that the authors of your favorite romance novels support adult literacy?

"RWA began working with Laubach Literacy in 1991, and we are very proud of our long-standing relationship with the combined organization now known as ProLiteracy Worldwide. Storytelling is fundamental to the human experience, and romance fiction explores issues of universal and eternal human interest, thus RWA and its members support the axiom that literacy is individually and culturally vital. We are proud not only of the money that we have raised through our partnership with ProLiteracy Worldwide, but how lives have been changed."
—Allison Kelley, CAE, executive director of Romance Writers of America

Romance Writers of America (RWA) is a nonprofit member association in Houston, Texas. RWA strives to advance the professional and common business interests of career-focused romance writers through networking and advocacy and by increasing public awareness of the romance genre. The organization also has supported adult literacy since 1991 with this year being one for the books.

The organization recently held its annual book-signing event, Readers for Life Literacy Autographing, in Orlando, Florida, where hundreds of romance authors met and signed books for fans. The proceeds from book sales raised more than $44,163.59, which went to ProLiteracy and the Florida Literacy Coalition. These donations are enabling more than 40,000 adults to improve their literacy skills. Since 1991, RWA’s donations to literacy programs have reached over $1 million as of this year.

The Tremendous Support for Adult Education

There are 36 million adults in the U.S.—and almost 800 million worldwide—that struggle with basic reading, writing, and math skills. ProLiteracy is thankful for the authors, publishers, readers, and literacy partners who have helped RWA support adult literacy, and help us break the cycle of poverty, build workforce skills, and improve the quality of life for adults worldwide
