Video: See how we’ve been helping domestic violence survivors and what our next steps are

Due to last year’s success, ProLiteracy’s Expanding Access program will soon be offering its services in Florida and Ohio. The program is designed to break the cycle of poverty by providing literacy services to community organizations that have not previously offered them.

As ProLiteracy expands into Florida, Expanding Access will work to expand the literacy service model in domestic violence agencies.

We at ProLiteracy are so proud of these domestic violence survivors and the progress they have made.

Each One Teach One Adult and Family Literacy Program of San Antonio, Texas, is one of the organizations that has benefited from Expanding Access and the Dollar General Literacy Foundation’s $200,000 grant.

“Expanding Access has enabled our agency to bring much needed educational support to a particularly vulnerable population: - female survivors of domestic violence,” said Carolyn Heath, Each One Teach One’s executive director. “By planting the seeds of self-confidence and education, these women can continue toward their goals either with our agency or other adult education providers when they leave the Family Violence Prevention Services shelter. This is the only location in San Antonio where survivors can receive one-on-one educational support.”

In Zanesville, Ohio, ProLiteracy will work with an existing community organization that reconnects fathers with their families as well as with a homeless shelter to provide job readiness skills.

Locations already touched by Expanding Access:

•Ardmore, OK

•Zanesville, OH

•Lakeland, FL

•Immokalee, FL

•Fort Walton Beach, FL

•El Paso, TX

•San Antonio, TX

•Little Rock, AR
