Working with Adult Learners

Working with Adult Learners examines the characteristics shared by adult literacy and ESL learners, identifies principles that guide instruction, and recognizes the life issues that may create barriers to learning.

Although instructing basic adult literacy students and ESL students can be very different experience, the two have quite a bit in common. In this course we will, examine characteristics shared by all adult learners, study key principles that guide instruction, and address life issues that may hinder progress. You will participate in a series of problem-solving scenarios designed to test your understanding and facilitate practical application.

Understanding the Reading Process

Understanding the Reading Process introduces adult literacy and ESL instructors to the reading process. In this course, you will learn about the research behind the components of reading instruction: alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. You will be able to identify teaching strategies that can be used to help learners develop their skills in the four component areas. You will also gain an understanding on how to talk with students about the reading process and how good readers approach reading.
