Shakira Mebarak, a Colombian singer-songwriter, record producer, dancer, actress, and philanthropist, was awarded with the World Literacy Foundation’s 2020 Global Literacy Award for her contributions to literacy around the world.

This foundation not only helps fund education for early childhood development, but it also supplies nutritious meals and economic opportunities for families. By helping children receive an enriched education, the Pies Descalzos Foundation is helping to lessen the chance for low literate children to become low literate adults susceptible of falling victim to unemployment, welfare, and crime.
