INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES FOR INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS
Basic Literacy Instruction - Various Languages:
- Since the late 1950s ProLiteracy (formerly known as Laubach Literacy International) has been committed to developing native language literacy materials. Our co-founder, Dr. Frank Laubach, traveled the world working in remote villages to establish literacy programs and develop reading materials in local languages. In an effort to continue promoting native language literacy, ProLiteracy is planning to digitize Dr. Frank Laubach’s original materials and make available on ProLiteracy Education Network and Worldreader’s digital app. We have archived literacy materials in more than 50 native languages. In addition, we are translating the full curriculum of Laubach Way to Reading Book 1 from English to Arabic. This project is a result of generous donations to the Robert S. Laubach Publishing Innovation Fund.
Basic Skills for Community-Oriented Development
-
Basic Skills for Community-Oriented Development was written for those who are already supporting basic skills development for adults and out-of-school youth in developing countries or those interested in doing so. This resource guide will help readers better understand what they might do to support basic skills development in their communities and nations—and be inspired to do so. Basic Skills for Community-Oriented Development was written by Paul Jurmo, Ed.D, with the help of a team of educators at the field level, representatives of international education organizations, and staff at ProLiteracy.

Literacy Solutions Manuals:
- Simple discussion manuals incorporate literacy instruction with specific development issues. Each manual contains drawings of real-life situations along with related questions, vocabulary words, and key ideas. Teachers use the drawings and discussion questions to help learners develop literacy skills and identify solutions to local problems learners encounter.
ProLiteracy’s partners translate the manuals into their native languages and adapt the drawings to reflect local lifestyles. To date, ProLiteracy has translated manuals in 34 languages with 128 adaptations.
Faith-based Literacy Materials:
- In the 1950s and ’60s, Dr. Frank Laubach developed a series of adult-literacy primers based on the life of Jesus Christ. As Dr. Frank pioneered literacy campaigns worldwide, Bible stories written at low literacy levels were the most requested by new readers. Translated into more than 50 languages, these easy-to-read books helped adults learn to read while learning about Christ. The booklets use illustrations, vocabulary, and simple language that have been adapted for each country/language. Today, ProLiteracy has 55 different versions of these primers available.
