The paper discusses the proposal for a new unified name for adult literacy, numeracy, and English language education. The author questions the need for a new name and doubts if the proposed name, “adult foundational education,” adequately represents the field.

They argue that language works through a network of similarities and that branding efforts may not have a significant impact. The limited resources allocated to adult education and the diversity within the field make it unlikely for a single new name to gain widespread acceptance. The author suggests highlighting commonalities rather than seeking formal alignment.
