The Numbers Don’t Lie

This fact sheet highlights the issue of adult literacy in the United States, where more than 48 million adults lack basic reading, writing, and math skills beyond a third-grade level.

Only a small percentage of those in need receive services, and many programs have waiting lists due to high demand.

Low literacy levels are associated with lower earnings and increased health care costs. The importance of education in reducing incarceration rates and improving children’s academic success is emphasized.

The fact sheet also touches upon challenges faced by immigrants.
