Jim Thorpe, an American Indian athlete, achieved greatness in football and track. He won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympics. However, his medals were later stripped due to playing professional baseball.

Thorpe continued in professional sports but faced financial difficulties. He was posthumously recognized as the greatest athlete from 1900 to 1950, and his Olympic medals were returned to his family in 1982.
