New Materials, New Momentum: Latest New Readers Press Products

When the Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) announced it was updating its TABE® assessment, Shannon Hinson needed to find updated materials.

As director of adult education and literacy (AEL) at Moberly Area Community College, she wanted to ensure she was providing their nearly 370 students across multiple sites with instructional materials that would ensure they would make the skills gains needed to advance toward their goals.

New Readers Press, she said, is one of her go-tos and, having previous success with TABE® Mastery 11&12, she jumped to purchase our updated TABE® Mastery 13&14.

As one of the first product lines tailored to the new assessment to hit the market, Hinson was impressed that, across levels, the books and passages not only align with the new assessment blueprints but also align with the look of the new TABE 13&14 assessment, which is vitally important to both teachers and students.

Because the classes at the AEL program are mixed level, the materials they choose are even more important so students can follow individualized academic plans, Hinson said.

In one class of 15 or so, some students may be studying at TABE Level E (grade-equivalent 2–3) while others are preparing for the HiSET® exam and using assignments from the TABE Level D (grade-equivalent 7–8) or Level A books (grade-equivalent 9–12). Through the TABE® Mastery 13&14 Teacher’s Manuals, instructors can provide every student with the necessary support using differentiated instruction strategies that has translated to success.

Over the previous two years, more than 75% of students within the AEL program have advanced to a higher level of study. Hinson expects that trend to continue by using TABE® Mastery 13&14.

The Next Step, one of the oldest public charter schools in Washington, DC, providing youth and young adults the opportunity to continue their education and improve English, is also a user of New Reader’s Press print and online materials. Four instructors with almost 20 years of experience at The Next Step, find the ease of use for students and teachers to be a differentiator of New Readers Press TABE® Mastery materials.

“We were researching materials that are teacher and student friendly. For students in level 1–4, we were looking for products aligned to TABE. That’s when we found New Readers Press TABE® Mastery 11&12. We saw better results for our students. We have now transitioned to the new TABE® Mastery 13&14,” said Douglas Reyes.

“The books come with different tools and different ways to use it since students are progressing at a different pace. The pretest helps you determine where the student really needs to focus. I can take a more targeted approach to include the New Readers Press online resources to create a curriculum based on their action plan,” said Michelle Burke.
