Literacy Opportunity Fund

The Literacy Opportunity Fund awards grants to nonprofit organizations within the United States that provide literacy services directly to students.

The Literacy Opportunity Fund distributes grants of $3,000 to $6,000 to support general operating expenses.

This new fund aims to meet the needs of literacy organizations of all types and sizes so that they may effectively and efficiently provide services to students.

Application Guidelines

To be eligible for this grant, your organization must

  1. be a registered nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status
  2. have an Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  3. provide literacy services directly to students
  4. be located within the United States
  5. not have already received a Literacy Opportunity Fund grant this calendar year

Applications that do not meet all requirements for eligibility will not be reviewed. 

Grants are awarded quarterly throughout the year, organizations are eligible to apply by one of the following deadlines:

  1. January 3
  2. April 1
  3. July 1
  4. October 1

The application will open one month ahead of the deadline. If any of the above dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the proposal must be received the first working day following the published deadline.

Notifications of approval or denial will be sent via email eight (8) weeks after the submission deadline.

Our average grant will be between $3,000 and $6,000. If your application is approved, a check will be sent to your organization.


Grants are given to support general operating expenses. Applications are reviewed based on the individual needs of the literacy organization. General operating expenses might include salaries, technology, supplies, teacher stipends, equipment, space rental, etc. However, your application might also focus on a particular project or new programming effort.


The summary of your request should include (at least) the following information: What kind of literacy services does your organization provide? To whom are you providing services? For what would your organization use this grant?


Yes. ProLiteracy administers the National Book Fund, Mobile Learning Fund, and Literacy Opportunity Fund. The Nora Roberts Foundation also administers additional grants to programs supporting humanitarian efforts, literacy, children, and the arts. Eligible organizations are not precluded from applying to any or all of these funds to support literacy work. 


Yes. In the application, please describe your organization’s relationship to the applying 501(c)(3).


Unfortunately, only organizations within the U.S. may apply to the Literacy Opportunity Fund.
