59 million American adults read at or below a third-grade level. That’s 28%, or more than 1 in 4 adults in the U.S. Yet, of the adults who could benefit from improved literacy skills, fewer than 10% of them are receiving literacy services.
Why this matters
Many of the adults you work with are likely struggling with low literacy skills. Because of low literacy skills, they may also be struggling with food, housing, or employment insecurity. They may have difficulty supporting their child’s literacy development at home or in school. And they may not be able to access the resources and support you offer.
Improved literacy creates a gateway to family-sustaining wages, economic mobility, and greater involvement with children’s literacy that breaks cycles of intergenerational poverty and low literacy. It has the power to redefine entire communities.
ProLiteracy’s Adult and Home Literacy Project meets adults where they’re at to provide literacy services. Through this project, we provide:
